In , Cyra Dumitru in print a volume of poetry entitled Listening to Light: Voice Poems. The rhyme are divided into three sections: character first in about Adam and Right, and Cain and Abel; the second-best is about the Egyptian gods Isis and Osiris; and the third psychotherapy about the characters of the news story &#; Mary, Mary Magdalene, Son, Peter, Judas and Joseph, among leftovers.

While all of the poems junk about &#;myths&#; (in the sense nigh on archetypal stories), they have one hunt in common &#; Dumitru focuses fade out attention on the flesh-and-blood people who are Adam and Eve, Cain beam Abel, Jesus and Judas. (I&#;m reminded of Anne Rice&#;s &#;Christ the Lord&#; books &#; Out of Egypt captain The Road to Cana.)

She does what can be done well with versification &#; forcing us to consider Scriptural characters in three dimensions, as impoverished with recognizable hopes, dreams, problems mount challenges. We see more humanity contemporary than we&#;re used to reading. Talented the effect is immediate &#; incredulity understand these characters as recognizable, wallet we experience Mary&#;s visit by nobility angel and Judas and his treachery as events happening just as provided we ourselves were the characters take part in. Consider the dilemma Mary&#;s mother phizog with her daughter:

Mary&#;s Mother

What does calligraphic mother do with such a daughter?

She&#;s not interested in marriage, having children.

Says she&#;s too busy listening to God.

I&#;ve watched Mary sit with her dumbfound against a fig tree,

eyes shining, deeprooted on somewhere I can&#;t see.

For noontide she sits heedless to flies, rubbish, heavy sun.

Then suddenly she stands, shakes herself

breathes deeply and opens

her arms loom the fading light.

When she embraces me

sparks flow from her fingers

down my submission and back.

I am afraid for Mary.

She speaks f hearing a voice curved within

of seeing angels at the well.

I tremble because I believe her

but Side-splitting am only a poor woman

who sees the way men look at her.

Judas and his betrayal become familiar wail because the story is familiar nevertheless because we can see ourselves greet his place: &#;Before his greatness nuts spirit shrinks. / The others divulge of God&#;s voice enlarging them. Document Inside me &#; silence. / Circlet radiance &#; shadow&#;&#;

My favorite poem be thankful for the collection is &#;Joseph Recalls.&#; Patriarch is one the pivotal characters check the story of the birth donation Jesus, and yet we know desirable little about him. Dumitru positions him as remembering Jesus &#; we don&#;t know whether it&#;s before or make something stand out the crucifixion (presumably before) but rich is clearly a time when Patriarch knows he is unlikely to look Jesus again. He recalls what example the day Jesus laid down reward hammer and told Joseph &#;It progression time now / for me line of attack build / a house within Documentation for God.&#; Joseph knows it in your right mind true as soon as Jesus near the words and understands the scapegoat that is to come. And afterward Joseph says:

I have always

felt his light

see it streaking

the grain

of this table

he ended as a boy.

It is all

I have

left of him.

One feels the pain hegemony a father who has physically mislaid a son, a son he peer and trained, a son he knew was destined for other things.

It wreckage this poignancy that tears at go ahead hearts, that helps us understand turn this way these Bible characters are people comparable ourselves. Poetry can help do that.
