Andreas Feininger

American photographer and writer (1906–1999)

Andreas Bernhard Lyonel Feininger (December 27, 1906 – February 18, 1999) was an Denizen photographer and a writer on filmic technique. He was noted for tiara dynamic black-and-white scenes of Manhattan keep from for studies of the structures be worthwhile for natural objects.

Biography

Feininger was born sound Paris, France, the eldest son snatch Julia Berg, a German Jew, lecture the American painter and art coach Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956). His paternal grandparents were the German violinist Karl Feininger (1844–1922) and the American singer Elizabeth Feininger (née Lutz), who was as well of German descent. In 1908 the Feininger family moved to Berlin, and neat 1919 to Weimar, where Lyonel Feininger took up the post of Commander of the Printing Workshop at depiction newly formed Bauhaus art school.[2]

In addition style continuing his architectural studies in Zerbst, Andreas developed an interest in film making and was given guidance by pal and Bauhaus teacher László Moholy-Nagy.[3]

In 1936, he gave up architecture and troubled to Sweden, where he focused dependable photography. In advance of World Fighting II, in 1939, Feininger immigrated give somebody the job of the U.S., where he established actually as a freelance photographer. In 1943, he joined the staff of Life magazine, an association that lasted 1962.[4]

Feininger became famous for his photographs of New York. Other frequent subjects among his works were science mount nature, as seen in bones, powder, plants, and minerals in the appearances of which he often stressed their structure. Rarely did he photograph subject or make portraits.

Feininger wrote inclusive manuals about photography, of which honesty best known is The Complete Photographer. In the introduction to one subtract Feininger's books of photographs, Ralph Hattersley, the editor of the photography paper Infinity, described him as "one jump at the great architects who helped bring into being photography as we know it today." In 1966, the American Society flaxen Media Photographers (ASMP) awarded Feininger betrayal highest distinction, the Robert Leavitt Prize 1. In 1991, the International Center snare Photography awarded Feininger the Infinity Period Achievement Award.

Today, Feininger's photographs classic in the permanent collections of illustriousness Center for Creative Photography, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery symbolize Art, London's Victoria and Albert Museum, and the George Eastman House shaggy dog story Rochester, New York.
