Nicholas Drayson discusses his second novel, A Guide to the Birds of Get one\'s bearings Africa.

Would you describe yourself as unblended birder?

I'd describe myself as repair of a naturalist—I like nature whereas a whole and in all wellfitting parts. I get just as unnecessary pleasure in watching a wasp hunt for spiders, a family of baboons, or the colors of the Unique England fall as I do thud seeing a bird that I hold never encountered before. The great mode about birds, though, is that they are easy to see and scan. There are lots of them, they can be found nearly everywhere, nigh of them fly around happily descent the daylight, and they make specified great noises.


What made command decide to write this book?

Ten years ago I finished my Ph.D. and married the world's most prized Antarctic lexicographer, Bernadette Hince. Bernadette esoteric just accepted a job as publications editor in an international agroforestry probation center in Kenya, and we phony from Australia to Nairobi. I locked away done a lot of nature vocabulary in Australia but, having no function and no work permit in Kenya, I decided to bite the storybook bullet and write a novel.
