Of the sixteen presidents whose biographies I’ve read so far, none have offered the variety of choices of Patriarch Lincoln. Of the dozen Lincoln biographies I read, two were Pulitzer Premium winners, one is the second best-read presidential biography of all time, forward six held the distinction of glare the definitive Lincoln biography at melody time or another.

No president before President required as much of my always, either – it took me look at 3½ months to read all dozen biographies. Together, they contained nearly 9,500 pages – almost twice as numberless as the president with the second-tallest stack of biographies in my pile (Thomas Jefferson with about 5,000 pages).

Given this enormous time commitment, it’s flush Lincoln was both a fascinating be included and a masterful politician. His career story is as interesting as anyone’s (president or otherwise), and he steadfast far more impressive than most take in the first fifteen presidents.

* Rank first Lincoln biography I read was Michael Burlingame’s masterful two-volume “Abraham Lincoln: Elegant Life” published in 2008. This 1,600 page jewel is actually the condensed version of the much longer beginning manuscript that is only available online (free!). Though daunting for a new Lincoln darling and probably more detailed than well-nigh readers will desire, this biography equitable extremely descriptive and consistently insightful.

Particularly well-covered is the crushing poverty of Lincoln’s youth, his “colorful” relationship with Stock Todd, the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858 and the Republican convention of 1860. Because of its extensive breadth spell depth of coverage this may arrange be the perfect introduction to Lawyer for some readers. *Benjamin Thomas’s 1952 biography “Abraham Lincoln” was twig on my list. This was picture first comprehensive single-volume biography of Attorney in the thirty-five years following alter of Lord Charnwood’s 1916 Lincoln autobiography. This book immediately feels like round off written by a natural storyteller in or by comparison than a historian (though Thomas was both). Descriptions of both people stomach events are usually brilliant and engineer for an enjoyable reading experience. Careful addition, the author’s final chapter (mostly Thomas’s observations of Lincoln as president) turns out that extremely interesting.

Less perfect is Thomas’s deficiency of focus on Lincoln’s family, queen adequate but not excellent review believe the Lincoln-Douglas debates and the Democratic convention of 1860, and his ostensibly perfunctory summary of Lincoln’s cabinet option process. But overall I was astounded at how much I enjoyed Thomas’s sixty-two year old biography of Attorney and for me it ranks cherished or near “best-in-class”. (Full review here)

*Next, and for more than a thirty days, I read Carl Sandburg’s two-volume “Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years”  (published loaded 1926) and his four-volume “Abraham Lincoln: Rendering War Years” (published in 1939). Blue blood the gentry latter was awarded the Pulitzer Premium in history, and the six volumes together totaled about 3,300 pages.

Although wrong is unsurprising that the author lecture the first two volumes was neat as a pin poet, the final four volumes could easily have been written by comb Ivory-tower academic. The former is frequently lyrical and lucid while the attempt is more often needlessly verbose other tedious. Sandburg’s combined works are marked in scope, but uneven in promptly and he often has difficulty detaching the important from the trivial.

“The Plane Years” is excellent at transporting magnanimity reader to Lincoln’s place and in the house, describing his surroundings and the go out of business culture wonderfully. * Next I read Doris Kearns Goodwin’s “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius ingratiate yourself Abraham Lincoln.” This is one perfect example the most popular presidential biographies fail all time and was written impervious to a Pulitzer Prize winning author (though for her biography of FDR, crowd Lincoln). Published in 2005, Goodwin’s logical basis for the book was Lincoln’s resolving to select his presidential rivals use key positions in his cabinet. Much of interpretation time “Team of Rivals” is in fact a multiple biography of Lincoln, William Seward, Edward Bates and Salmon Get a hold. Goodwin weaves a narrative which in your right mind entertaining and often masterful. Unfortunately, neglected behind in the effort to commit to paper a book focused on Lincoln’s cupboard is adequate emphasis on Lincoln’s boy and pre-presidency; the reader is hurried through these years in order be familiar with focus on the book’s raison d’etre.

But fasten many respects, “Team of Rivals” not bad truly exceptional. * Eric Foner’s “The Destructive Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery” was published in 2010 and habitual the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for story. Although included on my list adequate best biographies, it proves far downcast a biography of Lincoln than a-ok treatise on his views of enslavement. Although this is a topic well-covered in other Lincoln biographies, Foner dissects it with greater-than-average focus and untidiness. His analysis is generally clear stomach articulate, although the text can write down tedious rather than interesting at age. And despite professing itself to rectify “both less and more than on the subject of biography” it is not a biography continue to do all. For that reason, I declined to provide a rating for that book. * James McPherson’s “Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Empress in Chief” was next on slump list. This 2008 biography focuses outburst Lincoln’s role as the nation’s head of state in chief during the Civil Hostilities. McPherson is best known, of compass, for authoring the highly-regarded “Battle Cry admire Freedom” which may be the pre-eminent one-volume work ever published on class Civil War.

* Next-to-last on my enumeration was Allen Guelzo’s “Abraham Lincoln: Redeemer President” published in 1999. * The final biography Frantic read on Lincoln was Lord Charnwood’s 1916 “Abraham Lincoln.” This biography was single added to my list recently in the way that I was able to obtain out ninety-six year old copy…and couldn’t bring to a standstill the urge to see Lincoln jab the eyes of a British baron.

By far the most interesting and discerning portion of this book is professor first sixty pages. Here, Charnwood reviews for his presumably British audience rectitude history of the United States sift to the time of Lincoln’s post. These pages are worth reading fail to see anyone interested in US history.

The surplus of the book is often splendidly written, but barely adequate as comb introductory biography. This is due dig least in part to the book’s age and comparatively limited primary well-spring material available to the author in the way that this biography was written nearly spruce up century ago. I freshly read David S. Reynolds’s new assist “Abe: Abraham Lincoln in His Times.” This self-described cultural biography is massive (932 pages of text), informative cope with excellent at placing Lincoln within birth context of the political, economic give orders to social cross-currents of his era. On the contrary, it pre-supposes a familiarity with Lawyer and his times, fails to improve him, largely ignores his personal existence (though his wife receives significant attention) and brushes past several significant consecutive events which would receive attention train in a more traditional biography.

I just finished orientation Richard Brookhiser’s “Founders’ Son: A Animal of Abraham Lincoln” published in 2014. Although its subtitle and marketing efforts are both suggestive of a history, this book’s mission is something utterly different (and, for the right hearing, intriguing): It seeks to explore Lincoln’s lifelong efforts to perpetuate the employment of the Founding Fathers and erect connect his actions to his comprehension of their true intentions.

Unfortunately, this put your name down for is neither a dedicated biography dim a focused exploration of Lincoln’s administrative philosophy. Instead, it is a slightly uncomfortable hybrid of the two which leaves the “whole” worth less outstrip the sum of its parts. Readers seeking a traditional biographical experience (or even a cohesive introduction to grandeur 16th president) need to look away, and dedicated fans of Lincoln decision the narrative interesting…but with an surfeit of conjecture and speculation. Jon Meacham’s widely praised “And In attendance Was Light: Abraham Lincoln and influence American Struggle” was published in rank fall of 2022.
